The IPPOCAMPO project is part of a broader EU project to reinvent the role of the artist by exploiting new opportunities, including digitally mediated forms of content production and collaboration with citizens in content creation (OECD, 2020). At the same time, COVID-19 forces individuals to acquire life skills (flexibility, critical and creative thinking skills (JRC, LifeComp 2020) to become more resilient and creative in times of crisis. Based on the above, it is a critical moment to build creative resilience at community level across Europe by establishing a collaborative programme between artists/cultural workers currently in limbo and community members, promoting life skills development through the arts and using creative placemaking as a canvas to pilot test the acquired skills through an inclusive approach, promoting active citizenship. After a training course in Brussels, we learned how to engage people in society and activate new relationships through artistic tools and methods.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain located in the inner region of the temporal lobe and plays an important role in the formation of explicit memories (declarative and semantic), the transformation of short-term memory into long-term memory and also in spatial navigation.

Ippocampo’s relational performance reflects on the reactivation of memory, questioning the place and temporality of this event. Through conversations with boys and girls from Friuli Venezia Giulia, we explored the historical and geographical complexity of the same territory, leading to the emergence of fragments of personal and non-personal history, which together form a series of events and relationships that give rise to the history of Friuli.

The project aims to re-activate the memory of the territory through personal experience. Ippocampo aims to link the present, embodied in the actors of the performance, with the past, and then with the memories of previous generations within their families. The result is a memorial and intergenerational dialogue. The individual dimension is linked to the collective dimension that emerges from it. Hippocampus is a collective, a story that emerges from memory. It also examines the perception and distortion of memories reflected in what remains and the reality that is created. The memories and histories that emerge have only been made possible through a multifaceted and horizontal approach in direct and active dialogue with the community. Hippocampus has been developed through the dynamics and the sharing of a place-making that seeks and promotes unity, dynamism, urban vitality and doing together, building a dialogue and organising a space both mental and physical. Thanks to the training promoted by the Come2Art project and the dialogue with Iodeposito, the project was realised and made possible.
